Better Indiana, an independent, grassroots political action committee, has endorsed Rep. Mitch Gore, the Democratic incumbent for Indiana House District 89. The 2024 election cycle marks Gore’s second defense of a seat he first won in 2020. Better Indiana was a major contributor in his previous reelection bid and once again believes that House District 89 is crucial in the path to ending Indiana’s out-of-touch Republican supermajority. Rep. Gore possesses a proven track record as a public safety professional and community advocate. Our organization firmly believes he has earned another term in the Statehouse.
"I am deeply grateful to receive this endorsement from Better Indiana. Their faith in our campaign's vision and their commitment to our shared goals mean the world to me,” Gore shared.
During the 2020 cycle, Gore defeated Cindy Kirchhofer, earning 51.3% of the vote share and winning by 725 votes. In 2022, running against Michael-Paul Hart, Gore earned 6,960 votes – or 51.0%, emerging victorious by 265 votes in one of the state’s most competitive races. Gore’s victory further solidified Democratic support across the broader Indianapolis area and was widely viewed as a rejection of the extreme far-right education and reproductive rights agendas pushed by the likes of Donald Trump and Micah Beckwith.
“This endorsement is not just a testament to our hard work, but a beacon of hope that positive change is coming for our communities. Together, we stand stronger, ready to tackle the challenges ahead and build a brighter, more prosperous future for Hoosiers,” Gore insists.
Gore’s legislative track record illustrates his desire to work across the aisle with his Republican counterparts to formulate sensible solutions to the real problems confronting Hoosier communities. However, he recognizes that the Indiana House’s stagnate Republican supermajority has proven increasingly out of touch with these issues.
Rep. Gore is a lifelong resident of Indianapolis’ East and Southeast sides. Raised in a working class household, he regularly worked long hours throughout the Great Recession to help keep his family’s small Washington Square restaurant afloat. A product of public schools, Mitch earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Indianapolis, beginning his journey as a community organizer and law enforcement officer shortly thereafter. He and his wife, Brittany, have one daughter, Melinda, and proudly call Warren Township home.
Mitch’s devotion to community advocacy began during his time working for the City of Indianapolis, where he helped keep Hoosiers safe by eliminating blight, demolishing unsafe structures, and rethinking approaches to mental health and addiction. He further affirmed his commitment to public service, joining the Marion County Sheriff's Office, where he continues to serve as a Captain. Throughout his tenure as a public safety officer, Mitch has worked to rebuild community trust in law enforcement, practicing compassionate policing while saving space in jails for violent criminals. Since his election in 2020, he has consistently championed common sense, bipartisan legislation to bolster public safety and tackle gun violence by getting illegal guns off of streets and out of classrooms.
Rep. Gore also remains committed to fighting for legislation reducing healthcare costs, funding public education, and restoring women’s reproductive liberties.
“As a public safety officer and a State Representative, Mitch Gore has the experience and skill to craft legislation that can address some of our biggest challenges,” said Better Indiana chairperson, David Anderson. “His re-election will continue to make Indianapolis safer and Indiana better..”

About House District 89: The district includes portions of East and Southeast Indianapolis and its surrounding suburbs, including Beech Grove and Sunnyview. While much of the district’s eastern borders remain unchanged, the 2021 GOP redistricting altered significant boundaries along the Beech Grove area. In a hotly contested 2022 race, Rep. Gore narrowly defeated Republican challenger Michael-Paul Hart. District 89 is representative of the growing rejection of the extreme far right policy agendas advanced by the likes of Donald Trump, Jim Banks, and Micah Beckwith. The GOP candidate in HD 89 is Yvonne Metcalfe.
Better Indiana’s 2024 endorsements: Rep. Gore is Better Indiana’s second endorsement of the 2024 election cycle, following last week’s endorsement of Rep. Victoria Garcia Wilburn (HD-32). Mike Andrade, and Rep. Mitch Gore. Better Indiana also endorsed six mayoral races in 2023 municipal cycle, four of which resulted in Democrats successfully reclaiming City Hall.
